History

This marker recalls Pecos County's early civic landmarks. The county courthouse and jail were built in 1883 of native sandstone, and the nearby Zero Stone, set in 1859, served as the base reference point for all land surveys in what became Pecos County. The stone remains in what is now Zero Stone Park beside the 1912 courthouse. The historical marker was recorded in 1966.
