History

Lanes Chapel Cemetery lies in the southeastern part of Red River County, reached by FM 3390 east of Clarksville, and grew up around a chapel, school, and burial ground on the Elisha Bruton survey. A commemorative marker records Mordecai D. Fleming with an 1849 date, though the earliest confirmed burial is that of Mary McLean, who died in 1876. A cemetery society was organized in 1950 to maintain the grounds, and by 2004 more than 850 burials had been recorded.
