History

Whitemans Chapel Cemetery in northeastern Red River County north of Clarksville began as Greenwood Cemetery, donated to the community in 1898 by R. R. Gaines of Austin and deeded to trustees including D. C. Whiteman for two acres of cemetery and three acres of school land. It was reorganized in 1962 as Whitemans Chapel, and a 1983 affidavit formally changed the names Liberty Hill and Greenwood to Whitemans Chapel. The oldest marked grave is Levi D. Whiteman (1900), and about 220 burials had been documented by 2004.
