History

Ownby Stadium opened in 1926 as the home of the Southern Methodist University Mustang football team in University Park, near Dallas, and was named for donor Jordan Ownby. The roughly 23,000-seat stadium hosted the Mustangs until the team shifted its major games to the larger Cotton Bowl by 1948, and it was pressed back into service after the NCAA's 1987 'death penalty.' The stadium was demolished in 1998 to make way for Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the same site.
