History

The Haught Store (or Slapfoot) Cemetery is a small pioneer graveyard near Mesquite in eastern Dallas County. The surrounding settlement was first nicknamed "Slapfoot" for its rowdy Saturday-night dances around 1847, then renamed Haught's Store after the store of Mexican War veteran Samuel A. Haught when it gained a post office in 1866; in 1883 Haught deeded six-tenths of an acre as a family burial ground. Now on private land, only a handful of marked graves survive.
