History

The Sikh Center of the Gulf Coast Area was founded by five families in 1972 as the first Sikh gurdwara in Texas and one of the first in the southwestern United States. Its first temple opened on the birthday of Guru Nanak in November 1973 but burned after a lightning strike on July 11, 1974. The community rebuilt, and the center has served the region's Sikh community for more than fifty years; the Texas Historical Commission approved a state marker recognizing the congregation.
