History

The Houston Turnverein grew out of an 1854 gathering of nine German-speaking friends who founded a club devoted to physical exercise and civic life; its members organized Houston's first volunteer fire company and hosted the state's first Volksfest in 1869. In 1928 the club built a $150,000 Art Deco clubhouse at Southmore and Almeda designed by architect Joseph Finger, whose ornamental carving over the entrance included a set of nine bowling pins. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 but was demolished in 1993.
