The Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site in Fredericksburg, Texas, is home to the National Museum of the Pacific War, located at the boyhood home of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S. Pacific Fleet commander in chief during World War II. The site centers on the old Nimitz Hotel, built in 1852 by Nimitz's grandfather Charles Henry Nimitz and locally known as the Steamboat Hotel for its ship's-bow front; it now houses the Admiral Nimitz Gallery. The hotel was restored and reopened as the Admiral Nimitz Museum by an act of the Texas legislature in 1968, and in 2000 the complex was renamed the Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site - National Museum of the Pacific War, dedicated to the Pacific Theater of World War II. It was designated a Texas State Antiquities Landmark in 1983 and includes features such as the George H.W. Bush Gallery, the Japanese Garden of Peace, and the Plaza of the Presidents.
