History
Center City Cemetery traces to 1874, when Julia M. Bishop and an infant, both daughters of early settlers W. C. and Caroline Hughes, were buried on the site; Judge L. E. Patterson bought the 2.5 acres containing those graves in 1905 for use as a community cemetery. The surrounding Center City community had been settled in 1854 and was nicknamed "Hughes Store" after the Hugheses opened a store there in the 1870s. More than 500 people are buried here, including many of the area's earliest settlers, and a maintenance fund was seeded by a 1967 bequest.
