History

The City of Victoria Pumping Plant and Waterworks pumped water from the Guadalupe River to serve Victoria for the better part of a century beginning in the 1880s. After the first frame boiler house burned, a brick building was erected about 1890 to a design by local architect Jules C. Leffland, with later additions in 1926 and 1936. Portions of the complex were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and after being threatened with demolition the site was restored in 2011 and reopened as the PumpHouse riverside restaurant.
