History
John Van Bibber (1797-1884), born at Point Pleasant in present West Virginia, enlisted in Captain B. H. Duval's company under Colonel James W. Fannin during the Texas Revolution. He survived the 1836 Goliad Massacre because he was absent on sick leave when Fannin's command was captured at Coleto Creek. A lifelong bachelor, he ran a grocery store in Victoria, joined the California Gold Rush, and died in Victoria in 1884; his marker was placed in 1962.
