History

Founded in 1989 and moved to its current building beside Interstate 45 in 2002, the Texas Prison Museum chronicles the history of the state's prison system, which is headquartered in Huntsville. Its best-known artifact is 'Old Sparky,' the oak electric chair built by inmates that executed 361 men between 1924 and 1964. Other exhibits include a replica cell, contraband weapons, and the story of the Barrow gang's breakout from the Eastham prison farm.
