History
John Frelan Winters was born in Giles County, Tennessee, in 1814 and immigrated to Texas in 1834, settling in what became Walker County. He enlisted in the Texas army in 1836 and fought at San Jacinto in Captain William Ware's company, earning land grants totaling nearly 1,000 acres for his service. Winters died in 1864 and is buried in the Winters Memorial Cemetery east of New Waverly, where the State of Texas placed his marker in 1936.
