History

St. Joseph Cemetery—also known as the Elmina or St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery—is tied to the Polish Catholic community that settled around New Waverly in the 1870s under the Waverly Emigration Society, which recruited European farmers to the area. Father Felix Orzechowski organized New Waverly's St. Joseph's parish, the first Catholic church in Walker County, in 1869, and the associated burial ground on land later donated by Catherine Ripkowski became the resting place for the district's Polish families.
