Old Waverly

Old Waverly Cemetery serves the ghost town of Waverly, a mid-19th-century cotton and plantation community in southeastern Walker County settled beginning in 1835 by Alabama pioneer James W. Winters. The burial ground stands on land purchased in 1853, with the earliest recorded interment that of pioneer settler John Andrew Jackson (d. 1855); twelve acres were formally set aside for cemetery use in 1873 through the efforts of Waverly Institute trustee Henry M. Elmore. After the town refused the railroad and declined in favor of New Waverly, the cemetery remained one of the few surviving traces of old Waverly and received a Texas historical marker in 1978.
