History

The Ward County Museum centers on the Million Barrel, a massive concrete-and-earth crude oil tank built in 1928 to hold more than a million barrels; when its owner died, his widow gave it and the surrounding land to the county historical commission, which opened it as a museum in 1987. The 14.5-acre complex includes the restored 1909 Holman House, Monahans' first jail (1928), a 1930s depot, and railroad rolling stock, and the tank now serves as a 400-seat amphitheater.
