History

South Bend Cemetery serves the community of South Bend, set on a bend of the Clear Fork of the Brazos River in southern Young County near the Stephens County line. First called Arkansas by early storekeeper J. N. Smith, the settlement received a post office in 1878 and boomed in the 1920s after oil was discovered nearby. The Stovall Hot Wells health resort later grew up around a mineral-water well drilled here in 1929.
