History

Tonk Valley Cemetery takes its name from the Tonkawa people, who were settled on a state reservation in this valley in 1855 before their removal to Indian Territory in 1859. Pioneers established livestock farms here after the reservation lands opened to settlement in 1873, and by 1877 the community supported both Baptist and Methodist congregations. Many of the cemetery's burials date to 1910 through 1920, including victims of the World War I-era influenza epidemic, and veterans of the Civil War and both world wars are interred here.
