Murray

Also known as the Tyra Graveyard, Murray Cemetery had its origin on May 6, 1884, when Jesse V. and Martha Jane Tyra buried an infant grandchild on land they set aside near the community then called Fish Creek (renamed Murray in 1880 for postmaster J.J. Murray). The Tyras formally donated an acre for a public burial ground in 1898, and later gifts from the Price and Dozier families enlarged it to two acres. Interments include many area pioneers and veterans from the Civil War through Vietnam, and a cluster of deaths between 1900 and 1919 reflects the influenza epidemic of that era. The Texas Historical Commission awarded a marker in 1992.
