History

Tyra Cemetery, also known as the Tyra Graveyard or Murray Community Cemetery, began on May 6, 1884, when the infant child of Russell and Rosa Bell Tyra was buried on land set aside by grandparents Jesse V. and Martha Jane Tyra, who formally donated an acre for a public graveyard in 1898. Jesse Tyra had homesteaded here in 1874 as the first settler of the community later called Murray, known as Fish Creek until an 1880 post office. A cluster of deaths between 1900 and 1919 is attributed to the influenza epidemic of that era.
