History

Cometa Cemetery serves the largely abandoned community of Cometa in far southwestern Zavala County, about ten miles west of Crystal City. The area was a prehistoric Native and Spanish campsite, one spot known to Spanish agents as the Loma de Cometas, and was permanently settled after the Civil War beginning with the White and Vivian families around 1867. By 1900 roughly sixteen percent of the county's population lived in the Cometa area before it declined.
