History

Benito Juarez Cemetery is a large burial ground serving the Mexican-American community of Crystal City, the Zavala County seat. Among those interred here is Tomas Rivera (1935-1984), the Crystal City-born author, poet, and educator who rose to become chancellor of the University of California, Riverside. The cemetery is documented in the Zavala County Historical Commission's 1992 survey of county burial grounds.
