About this tour

When the United States entered World War II, North Texas became part of the arsenal of democracy almost overnight. This long driving trail traces that footprint across the metroplex and beyond — the infantry replacement center at Camp Wolters near Mineral Wells, where hundreds of thousands of soldiers were trained; the British RAF flight school at Terrell, where young pilots learned to fly under the Texas sun; the bomber and fighter plants of Fort Worth and Grand Prairie that turned out aircraft by the thousand; and the federal detention station at Seagoville. The route also stops at two air museums that keep the era's machines flying. The distances are substantial — Camp Wolters is roughly an hour west of Fort Worth — so set aside a full day. Each stop pins a piece of how the home front armed a nation at war.
