History

The Southern Pacific Railroad Passenger Station, known as Sunset Station, was built in 1902-1903 for about $115,000 by the Southern Pacific Railroad and designed by architect Daniel J. Patterson in the Spanish Mission Revival style. Nicknamed the 'Building of 1,000 Lights' for its abundant electric lighting, it was damaged by a 1907 fire but restored and reopened months later. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, it lost Amtrak service in 1998 and was restored as an entertainment complex in the St. Paul Square district.
