History

The Darrington Unit Cemetery holds the graves of inmates who died in state custody at the Texas prison known until 2021 as the Darrington Unit and since renamed the Memorial Unit. The prison stands on land that in the 1830s and 1840s was a plantation owned by John Darrington of Alabama; after emancipation the property passed through the convict-leasing system before the state opened a prison farm there in 1917. Like other Texas 'plantation prisons,' the unit operated as a large agricultural operation worked by prisoners, and its cemetery reflects that long and difficult history.
