History
Oakland Cemetery serves the old Oakland community of northwestern Comanche County, named for the live oaks that grew there and settled in the early 1860s. The first burial took place in May 1891, when Willey N. Burleson died; three months later circuit-riding Methodist minister H. S. Anglin and his wife, Sarah, deeded two acres for the church and burial ground to serve Oakland and nearby Sipe Springs, Duster, Beattie and Gorman. The Anglins gave additional land in 1907, and the Oakland Cemetery Association was organized in 1976. Both Anglins, along with dozens of World War veterans, are buried here.
