History
Sipe Springs Cemetery lies at the site of Sipe Springs, a Comanche County town settled about 1870 where pioneers found water seeping from a spring. Upon the death of Pratt Scarlett in 1873, John C. Smith gave five acres for a cemetery, though a clear title came only later when the Crain family's heirs deeded the tract to the Sipe Springs Cemetery Association. A brush tabernacle was built at the burial ground in 1890 and is still used for the annual July homecoming. The town boomed to thousands during an oil strike in 1918 before fading, but the cemetery, with more than a thousand graves, remains.
