History
The Valerio Cemetery is the family burial ground of the Valerio clan in Rosita (La Rosita), a South Texas ranching community in north-central Duval County settled by families from Mier, Mexico. La Rosita traces to Cecilio Valerio, who established the settlement in the 1830s along the old caliche road between Corpus Christi and Laredo; the family's land title was formally confirmed in 1871 after Cecilio and two of his sons served in the Union Army during the Civil War. A nearby post office called Trevino operated from 1917 to 1929, and by the late 1940s the community, by then known as Rosita, supported a church and two schools. The cemetery sits north of the old Valerio family compound and holds several generations of the founding family.
