History

The Alaniz Cemetery is a small family burial ground in La Rosita, a South Texas ranching community in north-central Duval County originally settled by families from Mier, Mexico. La Rosita was established in the 1830s by Cecilio Valerio along the historic caliche road between Corpus Christi and Laredo, and the family's land title was confirmed in 1871 after Valerio and two of his sons served in the Union Army. By the late 1940s the community included a church and two schools before its schools were consolidated into the San Diego district. Family graveyards like this one dot the ranchland around the settlement.
