History

Known as "Open Gates," this neo-Renaissance mansion was completed in 1889 for railroad and banking figure George Sealy and his wife Magnolia, who engaged the celebrated New York firm McKim, Mead & White. It is regarded as the only Southern building designed by Stanford White, and its warm palette of Roman brick, limestone and terra-cotta was set within a walled semitropical garden. The Sealy family conveyed the furnished house to the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1979 for use as a conference center.
