History
"The Open Gates," the George Sealy Mansion, was completed in 1891 for railroad magnate George Sealy and his wife Magnolia Willis Sealy, designed by Stanford White of the New York firm McKim, Mead and White, with a carriage house by Galveston architect Nicholas Clayton. The Sealy family gave the neo-Renaissance house and its contents to the University of Texas Medical Branch in 1979, and it now serves as a conference center.
