History
Amasa Turner (1800-1877), a Massachusetts native, joined the Texan forces at Gonzales in September 1835 and fought as a lieutenant at the Siege of Bexar. Appointed a recruiting officer, he raised nearly a hundred volunteers in New Orleans who reinforced Sam Houston's army before San Jacinto. He later commanded the Galveston garrison as a colonel, then settled in Gonzales, where he died in 1877 and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery.
