History
Charles Mason was a volunteer soldier of the Texas Revolution who fought at the opening Battle of Gonzales on October 2, 1835, as a member of Albert Martin's company and later served as a private under Andrew Briscoe at San Jacinto. Married into the DeWitt family of Gonzales, he left one of the accounts describing the famous 'Come and Take It' flag. He is buried in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery, where the State of Texas placed a marker to him in 1962.
