History
William A. Mathews (1800-1856), a Vermont native, was a colonist, courier, and quartermaster in the Texas Revolution. On February 4, 1836, he was named with Mathew Caldwell and Byrd Lockhart as a commissioner to raise a ranging company at Gonzales, and in 1837-1838 he served as a scout for the Republic in Lockhart's company. He died in 1856 and is buried in the Gonzales Masonic Cemetery among other Texas Revolution veterans.
