History
Valentine Bennet, born in Massachusetts in 1780, came to Texas in 1825 and settled at Velasco, where he was severely wounded in the 1832 Battle of Velasco. After moving to Gonzales in 1834 he was among the eighteen men who defied Mexican demands to surrender the town cannon in 1835, helping spark the Texas Revolution. He served at Concepcion and the siege of Bexar and remained active in the fight for independence until his death in 1843; the State of Texas marked his grave in 1962.
