History

The Monthalia Lutheran Cemetery is tied to a Lutheran congregation organized in 1892 by German settlers who had moved into the Monthalia area west of Gonzales. The congregation built its church in 1901 and used it until 1945, when the members transferred to the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gonzales. The cemetery remains as a marker of the German community that farmed this part of the county.
