History

Harwood began in 1875 as a stop on the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railroad, named for attorney Thomas Moore Harwood, and land was set aside for a cemetery when the town lots were platted. Its oldest marked grave is that of Civil War veteran I. M. Shelton, who died in 1877; veterans of conflicts from the Texas Revolution through Korea are also buried here. A cemetery association was formed in 1957, and the Texas Historical Commission erected a marker in 1986.
