History

Cedar Mills Cemetery preserves the memory of the vanished Cedar Mills community on the Red River in northern Grayson County. The town developed in the early 1870s around grist and saw mills cut into the cedar groves, received a post office in 1872, and grew to about 500 residents by 1884 before the railroads bypassed it and its population collapsed. The community was ultimately inundated when Lake Texoma filled in the early 1940s, leaving the cemetery among the few surviving traces of the settlement.
