History

Caney Cemetery is tied to the historically African American Caney community off FM 269 in eastern Hopkins County, which grew up around a church affiliated with the Rehoboth Baptist Association. The congregation met for several years before a meetinghouse was built on land owned by G. L. Stacy, and a local school enrolled seventy-one students by 1898. Many of the cemetery's graves are broken or marked only with blank concrete stones, a reminder of the modest rural community it served near the Pickton oilfield.
