History

The Runge African American Cemetery, historically called the 'Black Cemetery,' is one of four cemeteries at Runge and served the town's Black community. Runge was founded in 1887 by H. Runge and Company along the San Antonio & Aransas Pass Railroad and by 1890 had become the largest town in Karnes County; its separate Catholic, city, Hispanic, and African American cemeteries reflect the segregated burial practices of the period.
