History

Sumner Cemetery lies in the community of Sumner in northwestern Lamar County, about eight miles northwest of Paris, a settlement named for early resident Moses Sumner. Sumner grew after its post office opened in 1885, reaching about 250 residents by the late 1920s before a long decline. The cemetery served this farming community, which once supported gins, general stores, physicians and a school.
