History

The J. H. Rowell Home in Jefferson was built about 1858 and served as the residence of the J. H. Rowell family beginning in 1879. Rowell was a civic leader who served the river-port town several terms as mayor and alderman. The house was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1966 and stands among Jefferson's cluster of preserved 19th-century homes.
