History

New Zion Cemetery adjoins New Zion Baptist Church in the rural community of New Zion, about seven miles southwest of Jefferson in southwestern Marion County. New Zion was a historically African American farming community; in 1938 its four-room school taught more than a hundred Black students, and by the 1960s the settlement consisted mainly of the church, this cemetery, and scattered dwellings.
