Founded in 1968 under the leadership of George T. Abell and opened to the public in 1975, the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum is the nation's largest museum devoted to the petroleum industry. Its exhibits span the geology of the Permian period, oilfield technology, the Chaparral racing cars of Jim Hall, and paintings by Tom Lovell, and it is home to the Petroleum Hall of Fame honoring more than 140 industry figures. A major renovation completed in 2016 modernized its core petroleum galleries.
