History

This unmarked African American burial ground sits on a hilltop adjacent to the antebellum Hendrick plantation in northwestern Panola County and was begun by enslaved people, probably in the 1850s. When archeologists documented the site in 2008 they recorded 12 grave markers and 7 depressions representing unmarked graves. Freedmen who remained in the area after emancipation and their descendants likely continued to use the burial ground, which stands as a rare physical record of the enslaved community whose members were otherwise noted only as property in plantation records.
