History
First Baptist Church traces to an 1889 congregation of sixteen members; its current sanctuary at 9th and Polk Streets was completed in 1930 at a cost of roughly a half-million dollars. Designed by architects Ferrand and Fitch of St. Louis with Amarillo's Guy Carlander, the building favors rounded-arch openings and decorative interior ornamentation rather than one defined style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
