History

McKenzie organized in a log cabin near Clarksville in 1841 and that grew into one of the largest colleges in antebellum Texas before closing in 1868. The associated McKenzie Cemetery holds about three dozen recorded graves in southwestern Red River County, the oldest marked burial being W. K. McKenzie, who died in June 1848.
