History

New Hope Cemetery lies about a mile south of Detroit in southwestern Red River County, adjoining the New Hope Baptist Church that it has served the local African American community since the early 1900s. Church deeds for the land date to 1883 and 1888, and the oldest marked grave is that of Ervin Taylor, who died in 1902. Roughly 200 burials had been documented by the mid-2000s.
