History

Kanawha Cemetery serves the Kanawha community in the northwestern quadrant of Red River County, about four miles north of Woodland. It lies on the M. D. Wright survey, where an 1888 instrument set aside one acre for a church, school, and cemetery, conveyed from Cornelius Johnson to the Kanawha School and others. The oldest grave is that of S. F. Sharp, who died in May 1888, and about 170 burials had been documented by 2004.
