History

The Austwell Cemetery serves the coastal town of Austwell, founded in 1911 by developer Preston R. Austin, whose surname combined with the last syllable of partner Jesse C. McDowell's to form 'Austwell.' The town became the terminus of an Austwell branch of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway and was incorporated in 1914. It was badly damaged by a storm in 1919 and nearly destroyed by another in 1942.
